Wineries from more than 10 countries will be represented, with emphasis on wines from California, Oregon and Washington. As if that weren't enough, chefs will be preparing gourmet tastes, and there will be artisan brews for those who prefer beer to wine. This sounds like a great event to chase away the winter's chill.

I'm particularly looking forward to trying whatever DeLille Cellars is pouring, and sampling some of the tasty confections from Frost doughnuts.

There's a giveaway for two pairs of tickets to this event. Enter by January 31st to win.
http://exploregreatwine.blogspot.com/2010/01/ticket-giveaway.html

Escape from reality

Here's a few photos from our Maui trip. Had I looked online beforehand to see today's topic, I would have skipped it, I think. Not that I'm uninterested in options, but right now I'm focusing on learning all I can in one type of trading (stocks) rather than learning a little about each type (options, futures, forex, etc.). I did stick it out for the whole session, and took some good notes. It's week two, and I'm following along a lot better than I was during week one. It's just frustrating to be getting this education without having a trading account open yet. Patience has never been my strong suit, but I keep telling myself that I'm building a foundation for future trading. I'm also going back to class in person at the end of March...the same week I am moving!

In April we also plan to meet with an accounting company that specializes in doing taxes and bookkeeping for traders. We'll set up our company for trading (which I am still trying to name, the best I can come up that's not already taken is Laib Trading...not exactly original). Getting an estate plan finalized, including a will and living trust, is also on our list of to-dos. We've put it off long enough, and it will result in peace of mind when we get it done. I've heard too many stories about people who unexpectedly died (or became incapacitated) and didn't have any plans in place for their assets - resulting in a lot of hardship for those left behind. It's not a fun topic to think about, but a necessary one.

Updates...

It's been a while since I posted, so here's some updates...

After being laid off from WaMu in January, I did some soul searching about what to do next. While I enjoyed my time at WaMu (I worked with some great people there), I knew I didn't want to return to a corporate job sitting in a cubicle all day long. So I'm taking this time off to educate myself and start my own business in an entirely new field - stock trading. Working for myself is a very appealing prospect, as well as taking charge of my financial future (rather than standing by helplessly watching my 401K turn into a 201K). My goal for this year is to get the business up and running, and become proficient at trading. Eventually I want to replace (and exceed) the income earned at my old job, that will come with time.

Matt and I just got back from a trip to Maui - our first (and certainly not last) trip. It truly is a beautiful, magical place. We went snorkeling every morning and saw all kinds of coral, brightly colored fish, even a couple of sea turtles. It felt very peaceful - you forget about the world outside of the water and just follow the fish. Another highlight was going to a luau and watching the dancers in their brightly colored outfits. The show was authentically Hawaiian and a great way to learn more about the history of this area.

At the end of March we will be moving into our new house in Beacon Hill. It's a crazy time to sell a house and buy another, but this house has everything we've been looking for so we went for it. You get a lot more house for the money in Beacon Hill than in Ballard. Upgrading from an 850 square foot, 2 bedroom house to a 3,000 square foot, 6 bedroom house is quite a change! The best part is, there's a 2 bedroom rental unit downstairs so we can use that to help with the mortgage. It's close to the new light rail system, which opens in July. I can't wait to check out the new neighborhood and find where the farmers markets are. I already found a good coffee shop (of course) and we will be close to Tutta Bella pizza in Columbia City - which is out of this world good.

My thoughts are with Erik and Jenn as they welcome a new family member at the end of March - Cora Rachelle. She has some health challenges to overcome, and I hope that all goes well. She will be lucky to have great parents as well as a big brother who are awaiting her arrival.

P90X - day 8

Well I made it through week one of P90X lean.
What I liked:
1. The Kenpo workout - it reminded me of the TaeBo workouts I used to do. It was a great calorie burner and I had a lot of energy when I finished.
2. Cardio X - this one was easy street!
3. Stepping on the scale and seeing I have dropped 2 lbs! Matt lost 4.5! I'm looking forward to having my clothes fit better very soon.

What I didn't like:
1. How I felt after I did Yoga X for the first time. I thought it would be the easiest workout of the bunch, but it's 90 minutes of hard core yoga - the hardest one in my opinion. Matt says this one is his favorite, which surprised me.
2. Fewer carbs - this is really tough for me as I love my bread and pasta. However, I am allowed one carb per day so it's a bit easier than if there were no carbs allowed.
3. Lower energy/feeling hungry - my body is getting used to more workouts/fewer carbs and I am watching my energy level closely. After workouts I am drinking protein powder with milk for recovery. I have to work hard to get all of the calories I need. The Level II breakfast scramble has 8 egg whites - that's a LOT more than I'm used to eating.

My goal for this week - keeping my blood sugar steady by eating snacks at regular intervals.

P90X program - day 2 of 90

Both Matt and I started the P90X Lean program yesterday - workouts 6 days a week along with a food plan. I'm excited to get some results and get in better shape. We took our 'before' photos and the fit test, which both of us passed (except for the chin up).

We're both doing just fine so far, I think the biggest hurdles will be 1) finding a consistent time to do the workouts with our busy schedules and 2) eating fewer carbs - I think Matt will have more trouble with this one, as he loves cereal, pasta, etc. The key to success will be logging everything and keeping each other accountable.

Luckily the routines are still fresh, and there's 12 of them so we won't get as bored as if we were doing only one. The yoga workout, which I thought would be easy, was killer. 90 minutes of sun salutations and some other moves tossed in that I've never seen in my year of doing yoga. I am still sore days later.

Today we're doing Cardio X - supposedly the least intense of the workouts. We'll see!!

Back from a long absence...

It's been so long since I posted (over two years) that I don't know where to begin...a few highlights:

1) My brother and sister in law had a baby (who's now a year old)
2) I bought a house in Seattle (March 2007)
3) I got married to my wonderful husband Matt on the beach in Mexico (May 2007)

Let's just say that 2007 has been a banner year for me - it's gone by like a whirlwind. We love our neighborhood of Ballard and we can walk to everything (grocery stores, retail shops, etc.). We bought a 1926 bungalow that needed some cosmetic updates, many of which we've already done. The kitchen needs the most work but new appliances and a coat of paint do wonders. We plan to finish the basement and add a bedroom/bath - that will most likely happen next year.

I'll be writing more soon, and will try to post more regularly. :)

Trip planning

Matt and I are planning a trip somewhere warm and sunny in November. We had originally planned to go the week between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1st but the prices were so high we changed our plans. Now we're deciding where to go. I've done some online research (tripadvisor.com, classicvacations.com) and we've narrowed it down to Mexico or the Carribean. I want to stay at a 4- or 5- star resort for super cheap! Someplace that's not crowded with a million kids hogging the pool. :)

It will be a great way to celebrate our birthdays. I want to sit on a white sand beach and have a good looking cabana boy bring my drinks (oops, wake up).

Corporate rants

Let me just state up front that normally my blog postings are positive in nature. But it's been a while since I've had a good 'rant' and today's events are just to good to pass up. For those of you reading my blog, be advised that any violent intent described in this email is purely fictional and I would not consider acting it out in real life. LOL.

This morning I had the delight of attending a project management class. It was the worst...about 2% of what was presented was actually relevant to my job, and it was geared towards really a really technical audience (specifically, our Technology Solutions Group). It was mind numbing listening to the PMPs taking about the latest software releases and using the PMLC instead of the CPM...

FOR 4 HOURS.

AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My group is not using the project management methodology presented, at least not right now. But our whole group has to go in CASE we do start to use it, so we know where to look for the information online. Why one person couldn't go, then report to the rest of us is beyond me.
I was getting paid to sit there and pretend to pay attention while some bimbo from corporate accounting went on and on in some sidebar discussion about getting the appropriate forms filled out if you're ordering hardware. What the HELL does that have to do with project management? I wanted to dump the water jug from down the hall over her head.

In other news, while on my computer yesterday I had a simple Outlook related question. I would start to write an email and want to send it to a group distribution list I had created. But for some reason I couldn't access my distribution lists from my email screen. I called the technology help desk and pressed the appropriate buttons to access Outlook help. I was on hold for a few minutes, then got on the phone with a guy who proceeded to ask me the same questions 3 times. He got remote access to my computer and tried a couple of things, asked me to reboot my computer twice, and nothing worked. The fact that his first language was obviously not English and could barely understand me might have contributed to the problem. After 45 minutes of this he told me he would have to 'escalate this to an Outlook specialist'. What?!? You'd think if you called the help desk and indicated you needed OUTLOOK HELP, you would get a specialist in the first place. But noooo...so I wasted 45 minutes of my life on the phone, I hung up no better than when I started. One of my co-workers overheard me explain the problem and started poking around in Outlook. She found an answer that fixed the problem in about 5 minutes.

God I love working for a corporation.

Moving is done!

Over the weekend the U-Haul truck was rented and everything is now at Matt's house in Mill Creek. There's still a few boxes to unpack, but most of the work is done and my life can resume some semblance of normalcy. I am operating under a sleep deficit that almost kept me at home today.

Tonight I'm going to a movie called Oldboy (an award winning film from Korea) with Kevin and his friend Steven. We'll be having dinner at Ballet, a Vietnamese restaurant as well. Maybe I should have suggested Korean food to create a theme for the evening...oh well. I haven't been up to Capitol Hill or seen Kevin for a while. The SIFF is coming up in another month, I have to decide if I want to go this year (last year I got a six pack of tickets with Shana, but the fact that she's in Bulgaria right makes it difficult for her to attend). It's gotten so big that there's huge lines for almost every movie, not just opening night.

Moving matters...

I am right in the middle of the process of moving...it's exciting but stressful at the same time. There's so many people and companies you have to notify. This Sunday I get the U-Haul truck! Luckily I have the advantage of being able to move things up to Matt's house gradually, before the actual moving day.

In other news, a group of us (Matt, myself, Jason and Roberta) went to the Bluwater Bistro on Friday night. I had a sweet potato ravioli in a brown sugar butter sauce with apples and walnuts. It sounds like a strange combination but it worked. We polished off a bottle of 2002 zinfandel that was really smooth (of course I didn't note the name so I could purchase it again!). I promised my friend Leilani that I would organize a wine tasting sometime in May at Portalis, an up and coming wine bar in Ballard. Now that bowling league is over our group will need other reasons to gather, and that will be a great one. Once my move to Bothell is complete I will have to find new neighborhood places to hang out. I have already found the Starbucks, it is within walking distance of the house! LOL.

Spring is here and predictably, my knitting activity is non-existent. It seems to be such a fall/winter activity when then weather is cold and rainy. The knitting circle at work seems to have dropped off (a pun for you knitters out there) but I hope we resume in the fall. There's a knitting shop in Mill Creek that has a free intermediate class Saturday afternoons, I may go check it out...it's always inspiring to see a shop full of yarn and learn new techniques. I'm thinking it might be fun to knit a purse or tote bag. I would love to know if there are any knitting circles up near the Bothell/Mill Creek area.

On tonight's ABC Nightly News there will be a feature on the 10 year anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. It's hard to believe that much time has passed. Erik is on tour there with the Air Force band and they may be be featured on the news.

What if someone combined craigslist's real estate for sale or rent listings + Google maps together? Find out here: http://www.paulrademacher.com/housing/
You can search any US city, using the house price or monthly rent as an additional search criteria. Pretty cool.

Money matters...

Lately I have been thinking about money. Specifically, if I am doing the right things now (saving, investing) to make sure I have enough for the future. I have a worry that I am not doing enough. Part of this worry stemmed from the fact that I have not educated myself enough about money matters such as IRAs, various investments, etc. I purchased a Suze Orman book geared towards 20 and 30 somethings who are just starting out in their careers but may have a lot of debt. I was rather surprised to learn that I was doing a lot of things right, and on track to correct those things I didn't. This put my mind more at ease, and I have experienced a mind shift recently - getting out of the mindset of living paycheck to paycheck, and moving towards making my money work for me. My immediate goals are to eliminate my credit card debt, build up a 6 month emergency fund, and invest in a Roth IRA. After those things are accomplished I will look at a non-retirement based investment fund. I thought it might also be good to join an investment club - both as a way to learn more about investing and to meet new people.

I'm also considering a network marketing opportunity to make some extra cash each month. My friend Melissa introduced me to a company called Arbonne - they provide health and wellness products and have been around for 25 years. Having been warned about pyramid schemes and companies that go bankrupt quickly, I did some research and was impressed with what I found out. Many people have done well with this company and the products they promote are both in demand and high quality. I am going to learn more and choose if I want to join the business. The way I see it, the only way I lose is if I don't go for it and wonder what would have happened if I did.

Vancover, BC - Valentine's weekend 2005

Latest happenings...

It's been a while since I posted here, and a couple of exciting things have happened since then.

My previous post about the Red Lake MN school shootings was linked on Slate.com's blog board on March 22nd! Needless to say I was very surprised and excited...it may not seem like much to experienced bloggers out there, but it was a big deal to me. I only wish that this was not triggered by such a sad event.

The other event concerns my social life. After a couple of weeks hinting and circling around the subject (by both of us), Matt has asked me to move into his house in Mill Creek. This city girl will be moving to the 'burbs! I will miss some things about the city (easy transportation, the character of the neighborhoods, being close to all the energy of the city, and being able to put on my iPod and walk through a crowd, completely oblivious. But the suburbs have their advantages too. The biggest advantage is that is where Matt is. Every day I am so thankful that he is in my life. I thought my life was full before I met him but I am discovering a capacity for love I never thought possible. We bring out the best in each other become and have a lot of fun together. I'm looking forward to our future! I'll be moving in at the end of April so my apartment is already covered with boxes.

Some events unfolded concerning two of my friends and a blog posting. I won't go into details here, but I believe that friendship will never be restored. There was an attempt to pull me into the middle of this situation which I went along with at first, but when I said I couldn't be involved any further (as I had nothing to do with the posting) one of my friends was upset. I have not heard from this person since. I am somewhat sad as we have been friends for a while, but I am standing firm in remaining neutral as I believe that one or both friendships could be ruined if I do not.

Why do things like this happen?

Yesterday I read a breaking news story about a shooting at a high school in Minnesota, my home state. The teenager, identified as 17-year-old Jeff Weise, stormed into Red Lake High School on Monday afternoon, shooting dead a guard, a teacher and five students before apparently killing himself. At least 14 other students and teachers were wounded in the nation’s worst school shooting since the Columbine massacre in 1999 that killed 13 people. As I read the article, the similarities to the Columbine shooting were chilling. To quote an article on MSNBC, 'the shooter was into goth culture, wore a big old black trench coat, drew pictures of skeletons, listened to heavy metal music and talked about death all the time.' He also said it 'that would be cool if I shoot up the school' but nobody thought anything of it. He was teased mercilessly by classmates. And the student posted several times on Nazi online forums. The irony here? Weise was Native American. Definitely not an ethnic group that Nazis would tolerate.

The question in my mind is, after the tragedy at Columbine (and others since then) WHY do people not take these threats seriously? School officials try to prevent things like this from happening by installing metal detectors, drug-sniffing dogs, and other measures. But this is a putting a band-aid on a bigger problem, which in my mind is the lack of support by the community. Where was his family during this time? Did they not notice the warning signs? And while teachers and school officials cannot control what comes out of teenager's mouths, they can certainly promote intolerance of bullying.

I can't comprehend what psychological state brings a person to the point of killing students, teachers, and his own family members in cold blood. Everyone thinks that things like that don't happen in Minnesota. If there's anything to be learned from this, perhaps its that this should be a wake-up call to the community. Things like this can, and do, happen anywhere.

Ah, spring!

With the advent of spring comes the allergy season. I really feel sorry for my cubicle neighbors who have to endure my sneezing and nose-blowing. After popping some pills it's marginally better... let's just say I will be very excited when the pollen count goes down and I no longer sound nasal.

On Saturday Matt and I hiked Little Mt. Si. We had originally thought about doing Lake Serene but as this is our first hike of the year, we chose a shorter one. It was a nice day - sunny and in the 60s. We saw some climbers tackling the East wall, it looked like a lot of fun. Since it's been so dry, even the ferns that are normally lush were looking a little wilted. The scenery at the top was spectacular, with views of Mt. Si and the North Bend area. We have upcoming hikes planned for Mt. Si and Lake Serene.

Another weekend adventure - going swing dancing at the Century Ballroom with a group of friends. We went to Monsoon, a new Vietnamese restaurant, for dinner beforehand. The waiter took one look at our Starbucks cups and brought us china. I guess we committed a faux pas there...oops. The dinner itself was very flavorful. The crowd at the Century was perfect - there was plenty of room on the floor for practice. The instructors injected a little humor into the lesson, which is always good in a room full of nervous newbies (and rusty dance veterans like me). Matt might be interested in taking a 6-week course, I'm trying to decide if I will do the same. It might be a little under my ability level but it's good to review the fundamentals and correct any bad habits I've picked up over the years.

Tonight is the first night of the new bowling league. I might pick up some bowling shoes and even a new ball. Just call me the Big Lebowski!! LOL.

I saw this list on Craigslist and thought it worthy to share. To any Republicans out there reading my blog, skip this section.
Things Republicans Believe: A truthful and sarcastic list
1. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is a solid defense policy.
2. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.
3. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business.
4. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s and John Kerry did in the 1970s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.
5. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.
6. Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.
7. Group sex and drug use are degenerate sins unless you someday run for governor of California as a Republican.
8. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.
9. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.
10. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multinational corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
11. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.
12. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our longtime allies, then demand their cooperation and money.
13. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

Concerts galore.

Spring is in the air, and there's some great concerts coming up. In the month of May alone, Snow Patrol, Keane, and Lenny Kravitz all have shows scheduled. I'm going with a rather large group of friends to see Snow Patrol - 8 of us in all. Everyone I asked accepted...I guess everyone loves Snow Patrol!

Another spring related event is Folklife. The first time I went to Folklife I loved it - a big global celebration with music, dancing, and food. Then in subsequent years it lost its novelty and became all about the same old food booths as last year, not to mention fighting the crowds (not as big as at Bumbershoot, however). As much as the novelty has worn off, I will probably go this year, as I live 5 mins. away by bus and have no excuse not to. It's fun to hear the bands from other countries. And usually the event alternatives are something weird like the 'National Tattoo Convention' or 'The Bubble Festival' (I swear I'm not making this up).

I also realized today that the battery on my beloved iPod is dying. It only holds a couple hours of charge, down from 8 hours when it was new. I will probably head straight over to the Apple store and give them even more of my hard earned money to buy another battery. Damn them for creating something so addictive!! Another recent wonderful discovery is BearShare, a P2P free music sharing service. Now I can download those hard to find dance tracks that iTunes doesn't have. Yay. Thanks Matt!

If only I were a programmer...

Ok, I'm officially frustrated!

I want to create a 'links' section in my blog sidebar section. So far all I've been able to accomplish is embedding a link within a blog posting, which is different. I went to the blogspot help section, I followed the instructions they gave and have gotten nowhere. Hmmm...maybe it's time to ask for help. If anyone knows how to do this please let me know.

Last night I had a couple of friends over, we did some rubber stamping and made a bunch of cards. It's a fun hobby. I did more of this a couple of years ago, but had tired of it and so it sat in a cabinet getting dusty...finding a friend who likes the same thing is great!

On Sunday I managed to lock myself out of my apartment (long story). Matt and I returned from a walk and discovered we couldn't get into my place...and my spare key was inside. I was thinking I had to call the landlord, who would have to come all the way from Redmond to unlock the door (that's assuming I could even reach him). I must admit I was slightly stressed out. However, Matt remembered he had opened a living room window last week, and had closed it but not locked it. So he took the screen off and made an attempt to open the window. It resisted at first but then opened...boy was I happy to see that!! Needless to say, the spare key is safely hidden outside to prevent the need for another 'break-in'.

Art, Museums, Music.

Yesterday I was seized with the inexplicable urge to look at art. Luckily for me it just happened to coincide with the first Thursday of the month, which is the date of the Artwalk down in Pioneer Square. I met up with Matt after work and we walked through the artist's booths in Occidental Square first. We saw a booth with some truly strange and ugly masks. Matt did a impersonation of the mask artist, devastated when he found his mask at Value Village. "I'll never do artwork again!". I was in stitches and he had to lead me away from the booth. :) There were some beautiful paintings at Foster-White in blue/turquoise tones and I always enjoy watching the glassblowers at the little shop nearby. It was relatively uncrowded, in constrast to the summer when you can barely get inside some of the galleries. Matt and I have very different tastes when it comes to art, and how we view it- I was teasing him a bit about his engineering mind. :)

My favorite museums are the British Museum in London (I am jealous of my friend Shana who just visited last week - I hope she saw the Rosetta Stone) and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. I am still cursing the fact that I was in NYC last October and didn't get to the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the MOMA - which was in Queens at the time. I took the subway to the upper East side and found out the hard way that Mondays are not a good day to go -they were all closed. So I consoled myself with a visit to the Museum of Natural History. There we were, myself and all the schoolkids, looking at the dinosaurs.

On the calendar for Thursday is Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto at Benaroya Hall. It's been a while since I've been to a concert. Tickets were difficult to get but I managed. Usually I enjoy the Romantic composers (Mozart, Bach) so this should be a nice change.

Websites I've found.

I've discovered a couple of great websites this week. They center around beauty and food, both of which are topics of interest to me. These two topics often can (and do) exist together! First, the beauty site: www.eyeslipsface.com. On this site all products are $1! Unable to resist temptation and feeling like a kid in a candy store, I proceeded to order a few items and will report on the quality soon.

While riding the bus to work this morning, I was reading the Post-Intelligencer article about food blogs. One in particular caught my eye - www.tasteeverything.org. There's tons of great links to other food blogs, as well as some mouthwatering recipes. You can never have enough of those.

I'm going back to trivia tonight at the EMP after a 2-week hiatus.
